At St Francis Xavier’s, we aim to ensure the transition into Kindergarten is a smooth and positive experience for all students.

Our transition program involves opportunities for students to visit the school, participate in classroom activities, playground games and get to know their buddy. Students in Kindergarten spend their two years with their buddy as our program begins with students in Year 5. Staff conduct sessions for parents to learn vital information about school readiness and supporting their children in the transition to school.

Kindergarten children are well and truly a part of the school community prior to their official first day of school. Children receive a special Kindergarten tee-shirt, information about our school, cards from their buddy and a few surprises along the way to make them feel special and excited about coming to school.

Community is an important aspect of life at St Francis Xavier’s Primary School, where social relationships are supported and encouraged. Kindergarten parents, siblings, grandparents and carers are invited to lunch on the Kindergarten’s first day of school.

Students transitioning to high school are also supported by involvement in induction days at St Mary’s Catholic College, Gateshead. The classroom teachers and Learning Support Teachers are also available to discuss learning and social needs with representatives of each of the high schools into which our students are transitioning.
